A Script to Remember
It’s scorching hot summer afternoon in the hills around Bologna, the sounds of a 1950’s Alfa Giulietta engine bounce off the walls of the narrow streets of Savigno. Bright costumes and international voices descend from the Piazza XV Agosto. The scene is set, but this time it is not for a film I am working on; it is the guests arriving for our wedding dinner at Amerigo.
In a setting reminiscent of a Fellini film, Amerigo have laid a long single table for 50 guests in the street outside the restaurant and prepared a feast from the surrounding forests and fields. It feels like the whole community has been involved in the preparation for “The Wedding”. The accordion of local musician Alberto Zamboni provides the soundtrack for a wonderful evening that had its script written the previous year –
In April 2023 I had proposed to my wife rather unconventionally on a wine bottle label as we dined at a table a few metres away from where we now enjoyed the meal of our lives.
Family is at the heart of everything Amerigo do, and it is here our own families from opposite sides of the Atlantic came together to share our wedding day
As with all good wedding meals, the menu was long, and the speeches were short. The wine from Folesano, Fedrizzi, and Le Vaie flowed long into the evening. 2024 is a special anniversary for Amerigo, but for me, 2024 started the clock on many wedding anniversaries to be celebrated under the awnings outside the restaurant.

A Dinner and an Engagement
The minute I walked into Amerigo, I knew it was a special place – What I didn’t know was just how special it was going to be for me in the year that followed.
I had been pondering proposing marriage to my girlfriend Carol for some time, but picking the right moment and the right spot had eluded me. But during our meal of green lasagne with chanterelles and Apennine deer leg, I knew instantly I had found the right venue.
I had never met Alberto before that night, but between us, whenever Carol left the table, we planned everything needed for the surprise. He was totally onboard with the subterfuge.
Carol took no persuasion to return to the restaurant a few nights later, after all there was still the local Rabbit and the Ragu Bolognese to try!
In the meantime, I had the wedding proposal printed onto a wine label for the restaurant
The night arrived, as usual the restaurant was full, the atmosphere jovial, but my heart was racing. Alberto arrived at the table presenting Carol with the “special” bottle to taste, hidden in the label were the words “Will you marry me”, I went down on one knee, and the proposal was complete. Thankfully she agreed to the union and the restaurant erupted with applause, with much banging of pots and pans from the kitchen – the best moment of my life.
The next morning, we feasted on local confiture and pastries, whilst Marina labelled jars of ragu in the background. Carol and I decided immediately that we would host the wedding in Savigno and of course the dinner would be at Amerigo… the rest as they say is history.

Un copione da ricordare
È un caldissimo pomeriggio estivo sulle colline attorno a Bologna, il rombo di un’Alfa Giulietta degli anni ’50 riecheggia tra le strette vie di Savigno. Colorati costumi e voci internazionali scendono da Piazza XV Agosto. La scena è pronta, ma questa volta non è per un film a cui sto lavorando; sono gli ospiti che arrivano per il nostro matrimonio da Amerigo.
In un’atmosfera che ricorda un film di Fellini, Alberto ha allestito un lungo tavolo per 50 persone proprio sulla strada davanti al ristorante e ha preparato un banchetto con i prodotti dei boschi e dei campi circostanti. Sembra che tutta la comunità sia stata coinvolta nei preparativi per “Il Matrimonio”. L’accompagnamento del fisarmonicista Alberto Zamboni fornisce la colonna sonora per una serata indimenticabile, il cui copione era stato scritto l’anno precedente.
Nell’aprile 2023 avevo chiesto la mano a mia moglie in modo piuttosto inusuale, su un’etichetta di una bottiglia di vino, mentre cenavamo a pochi metri da dove ora stavamo gustando il pasto della nostra vita.
La famiglia è al centro di tutto ciò che fa Amerigo, ed è qui che le nostre famiglie, provenienti da lati opposti dell’Atlantico, si sono riunite per condividere il nostro giorno speciale.
Come in tutti i buoni matrimoni, il menù era ricco e i discorsi brevi. Il vino di Folesano, Fedrizzi e Le Vaie ha accompagnato la serata fino a tarda notte. Il 2024 è un anniversario speciale per Amerigo, ma per me ha segnato l’inizio di molti anniversari da festeggiare sotto i tendoni fuori dal ristorante.

Una Cena e un Fidanzamento
Dal momento in cui ho messo piede da Amerigo, ho capito che era un posto speciale. Quello che non sapevo era quanto lo sarebbe diventato per me nell’anno a venire.
Pensavo di chiedere la mano a Carol da un po’, ma trovare il momento giusto e il posto perfetto mi era sempre sfuggito. Ma durante la nostra cena con la lasagna verde ai finferli e il filetto di cervo appenninico, ho capito all’istante di aver trovato il luogo ideale.
Non avevo mai incontrato Alberto prima di quella sera, ma tra noi, ogni volta che Carol si allontanava dal tavolo, pianificammo tutto il necessario per la sorpresa. Era completamente d’accordo con il nostro piano segreto.
Non ho avuto alcuna difficoltà a convincere Carol a tornare al ristorante un paio di sere dopo, dopotutto c’erano ancora il coniglio locale e il ragù alla bolognese da provare!
Nel frattempo, avevo fatto stampare la proposta di matrimonio su un’etichetta di vino per il ristorante.
Arrivata quella sera, come al solito il ristorante era pieno, l’atmosfera allegra, ma il mio cuore batteva all’impazzata. Alberto arrivò al tavolo presentando a Carol la bottiglia “speciale” da assaggiare, nascoste nell’etichetta c’erano le parole “Vuoi sposarmi?”, mi inginocchiai e la proposta fu completa. Per fortuna lei accettò e il ristorante esplose in applausi, con un gran baccano di pentole e padelle dalla cucina – il momento più bello della mia vita.
La mattina seguente, ci siamo abbuffati con confetture e pasticcini locali, mentre Marina etichettava vasetti di ragù sullo sfondo. Carol ed io decidemmo immediatamente che avremmo organizzato il matrimonio a Savigno e naturalmente la cena sarebbe stata ad Amerigo… il resto, come si dice, è storia.
